HONEYSUCKLE WAY: A FLORAL COMPANY IN MAINE
Owner Name: Andrea Ault | Location: Gardiner, Maine
INTERVIEW WITH HONEYSUCKLE WAY
How did you get started doing what you do?
I was interested in learning how to farm, and in 2012 I apprenticed at Broadturn Farm. During my time there, I was introduced to the world of flowers. I was inspired to start my own flower farm, Honeysuckle Way, in 2014. While I struggled to find a balance between the farming and design worlds, I realized my passion lay ultimately in design work. We continue to grow some of our own flowers, though the business has shifted almost exclusively toward floral design for weddings.
Who or what continues to inspire you?
I am inspired by scenes I'm drawn to in nature, such as a vine climbing up a wall or a bloom that's fallen over and has started to grow upright at an angle. I strive to create free-flowing designs that appear to be growing out of the vase they're in or around the arbor they're encompassing. I'm inspired by many other floral designers, as well. Two of my favorites right now are Trille Floral and Avaflora. When I notice elements in other designs that catch my eye, I try incorporating bits of them into my own style.
What do you enjoy doing on your day off? Hiking a mountain or exploring a Maine island!
Wedding trend that you're loving right now?
I love on-site floral installations. It's exhilarating, creating a totally unique design to serve as a wedding ceremony backdrop or hang over the head table. Extra bonus points if it's on the ocean or has a stunning view!
